New Communities Initiative
Led by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, the District program seeks to revitalize severely distressed subsidized housing with the goal of creating vibrant mixed-income communities. Since 2010, new development within a half-mile of Park Morton has surpassed 1.3 million SF, including 1,300 residential units and 110,000 SF of retail. As of December 2020, more than 1,160 units were in the pipeline, in addition to another 185 residential units under construction.
Park View Community Partners and the DC Housing Authority are jointly redeveloping the Park Morton complex and Bruce Monroe Park into 462 mixed-income residential units over three phases. The development plan includes a public park, apartments (including senior units), and for-sale housing.
Great Streets + Main Streets
Several streets in the area are designated Great Streets corridors. As funds become available, small businesses may apply for grants to cover capital improvements and certain soft costs. In 2020, up to $50,000 was awarded per location. The area is also supported by Lower Georgia Avenue Main Street through community-based economic development initiatives.
