The District of Columbia’s economy has seen steady expansion in recent years, thanks largely to robust growth in the private sector. In 2017, the city’s economy grew at a rate of 4.1% – the same rate as U.S. GDP growth – with output growing 4.7% in the private-sector and 2.9% in the public sector. The local economy further accelerated in 2018, with first quarter GDP growth at 4.6% compared to 4.2% for the national economy.
