WDCEP Explores Digital DC Tech Opportunity Corridor
July 2, 2014 — Last month, the WDCEP and District Government officials hosted a DC Space Finding Tour of Georgia Avenue and neighborhoods of Ward 4. In addition to showcasing real estate developments and available spaces for local and national entrepreneurs along Georgia Avenue and throughout Ward 4, the tour prominently featured Digital DC’s recently announced tech startup incentives for the Digital DC Tech Opportunity Corridor.

DigitalDC is a marketing and branding campaign run by the Deputy Mayor’s Office of Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) aimed at spurring further growth in the booming DC tech community. The Digital DC initiative highlights the growing number of District-based tech companies, provides the best resources to cultivate digital companies relocating and developing in the District and supplies job and training opportunities.
The Digital DC Tech Opportunity Corridor is a designated area, spanning nearly three miles of the 7th Street/Georgia Avenue corridor, which has been identified to bolster the District’s burgeoning technology sector. Through the Digital DC Technology Fund, early and growth stage tech startups that locate within the boundaries of the Digital DC Tech Opportunity Corridor can apply for up to $1 million in non-dilutive grants, ranging from $25,000 to $250,000. The fund will provide grant awardees with the training, access to networks, capital, and resources they need to excel.
This DC Space Finding Tour highlighted developments and leasable spaces ranging from retail to office to industrial in the neighborhoods along 7th Street, NW, Georgia Avenue and Ward 4. Attendees learned about the great opportunities for growth first-hand from WeWork and iStrategyLabs at The Wonder Bread Building, the Walter Reed redevelopment project, Busboys & Poets’ Andy Shallal’s upcoming restaurant at Takoma Central, and Lowe Enterprises’ regarding their Fort Totten Square project.
