Ward 4 Development
Below are a few of the development projects under construction and near completion in Ward 4.
Takoma Aquatic Center
Originally built in 1935, the Takoma Aquatic Center located at 3rd and Van Buren Streets in Northwest, reopened after completing renovations. The center reopened to the public on February 12, 2005.
Renovations to the center included a 38,000 square foot addition that houses a weight room, aerobics studio, meeting space, concessions area and pool with spectator grandstand.
The center’s existing outdoor pool was replaced with an Olympic sized pool featuring moveable bulkheads, diving equipment, locker room and shower facilities. The renovations to the Takoma Aquatics Center make it the largest indoor swim facility and the largest outdoor recreation center in DC.
The DC Department of Parks/Recreation and Jair Lynch Company served as developers for the $14 million project with Einhorn Yaffee Prescott Architecture serving as the architecture firm.
Brightwood Elementary School
Brightwood Elementary School’s original 1926 building is getting a complete update. The project will be completed in three phases, with Phase I recently completed. The school will be occupied during the renovations.
The first phase consisted of new construction which is attached to the existing building. At approximately 35,000 square feet, the new building holds a gymnasium, cafeteria, art and music classrooms, administration offices and health suite. The outside of the new building includes a loading dock and new entry-way to the school.
The second phase, currently under construction, is the renovation of the original building. This phase will include the addition of eight classrooms.
The final phase of the project is to demolish a 30-year-old temporary building located on the south side of the building. This phase will also see construction of a new addition to the school.
With renovations and new construction, the Brightwood Elementary School will be fully modernized and measure 86,120 square feet. The project is estimated to cost $19 million and is expected to be completed in early 2006.
DC Public Schools and Grunley/Goel Joint Venture serve as the developers for the project, with Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn as the architectural firm.
The Lofts at Brightwood
Currently under construction along Georgia Avenue is The Lofts at Brightwood. The 32 unit condominium development has luxury amenities like high ceilings, open floor plans, oversized windows, stainless steel kitchen appliances and a washer and dryer in each unit.
The building will include ground floor retail space, private parking available for residents and a state-of-the-art security system.
The $3.2 million project is being developed by the Neighborhood Development Company and is expected to deliver by spring 2006.
