Panel Weighs in on the Nuts and Bolts of Finding Talent and Labor Laws
July 2, 2014
Last month, the panel of distinguished speakers at the June edition of the WDCEP’s Entrepreneur Road Map event examined the steps District business owners should take to find talent and understand the labor laws concerning the government of their employees.
Tom Harrington, principal of the Employment Law Group, discussed the fundamentals of employment laws with attendees. Harrington advised attendees on questions to avoid during the interview and hiring process and urged business owners to focus on the purpose of the job.
Kristen Freeman, a Division Director at Beacon Hill Associates, shared the variety of avenues entrepreneurs can take to find talent, including referrals, staffing firms and online advertisements. When assessing an interview, Freeman encouraged employers to pay special attention to “tone, body language, consistency and confidence.”
Attendees learned about the plethora of resources available at the Department of Employment Services (DOES) from Todd Beazer, a Supervisor of the agency’s Business Service Group. Beazer walked the group through the nuts and bolts of the numerous services provided by DOES to employers and job seekers alike, many of which are available on their website!
