DC’s Biking Community Springing Forward
Washington, DC’s biking community has grown in leaps and bounds over the last several years
Since 2010, when Pennsylvania Avenue, NW received its 2-way bike lanes down the center of the road, DC has seen substantial growth in bicycle infrastructure, usage (aided by the Capital Bikeshare program) and small business community supporting the biking movement.
To illustrate the increasing bicycle reliance:
- 18% of metro DC households use bikes for transportation (The Wash Cycle, 4/3/15)
- 3.1% of all Washingtonians regularly commute to work by bike (Washington Post, 5/13/14)
- Between 2013 – 2014, DowntownDC BID installed 340 new sidewalk bike racks
As DC begins to segue into spring and warmer weather begins to creep back into the area, it’s an ideal time for riders to venture out and explore the diversity and scope of DC’s rapidly evolving biking community!
