Harris Teeter to Open in DC

On Friday, February 18, 2005, the groundbreaking and ceremonial lease signing was held for the District’s first Harris Teeter grocery store.

The event took place at the Citadel Building, located at 17th Street and Kalorama Road in Adams Morgan. In attendance were Jim Graham, Ward 1 Council member; Stanley Jackson, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development; Fred Morganthall, President of Harris Teeter; Douglas Jemal, Douglas Development; and a host of supporters for the new grocery store.

Deputy Mayor Stanley Jackson said, “…the opening of this store is a continuation of the commitment to build the District’s neighborhoods and provide quality services to all residents.” He also commended Harris Teeter and Douglas Jemal on their vision of Adams Morgan and the Citadel Building. Mr. Morganthall pointed to Adams Morgan as an emerging neighborhood in the District and Harris Teeter as just one project that will spur development in the area.

The full service grocery store will occupy 38,637 square feet of street level space with office tenants on the second floor. The new grocery store will feature approximately 100 dedicated parking spaces. The store is scheduled to open in fall 2006 and will employ more than 50 full time workers.
