Washington, D.C.—Giant Foods recently signed a lease to locate at the former Camp Simms National Guard site in Ward 8. The lease agreement calls for a 63,000-square-foot full-service Giant Foods and pharmacy combination.
Development of the site will begin in the fall 2005 and is estimated to cost $37 million. The grocery store is slated to open for business early-spring 2006.
Washington, DC Marketing Center president and CEO Michael Stevens says, “This is a major step towards economic revitalization for Southeast DC. The new Giant Foods store will demonstrate the buying power of Ward 8 residents and will drive additional retail to the area. We very much appreciate Giant’s commitment to the neighborhoods and residents East of the River that will allow them to shop in their own community.”
Redevelopment of this site is being headed by CHR LLC, which is comprised of Mid-City Urban, William C. Smith & Co. and the East of the River Community Development Corporation.
