First Ever Creative Economy Summit

What is a creative economy? It is fueled by businesses and jobs based in the arts from theatre, music and design to software development, media, film and more. In an effort to grow Washington’s creative economy, the Partnership joined forces with the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities and the Office of Planning to host Creative DC on September 5, 2007 at the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Lansburgh Theatre.

City officials including Mayor Fenty and Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Neil Albert joined civic, arts and business leaders from across the country to discuss strategies that will nurture, support, and grow the city’s creative businesses and jobs. Experts from various fields shared their stories in helping other cities transform their economies and offered insights into how DC can expand its creative economy.

Carol Coletta, host and producer of the nationally syndicated public radio show Smart City, addressed the critical importance a creative economy in driving a city’s vitality and legacy.
