DCMC Retail Survey

The Washington, DC Marketing Center’s DC Main Street corridor survey is near completion. In late January the Marketing Center enlisted the assistance of interns to inventory the DC Main Streets neighborhood retail corridors.

The interns successfully gathered data from 150 city blocks in order to inventory these historic shoppong streets. The Main Streets included in this inventory were: 14th Sreet Heights, 14th & U Streets, Barracks Row, Historic Brookland, Historic Dupont Circle, Gateway Georgia Avenue, H Street, NE, Mount Pleasant and the Shaw neighborhood.

The interns collected data on the retail storefronts located along the Main Street commercial corridors. The data included a photo of the storefront, if the site was occupied or vacant, name and type of business, number of floors the business uses, condition of the building and availability and type of parking.

The information gathered from these surveys will be entered into the Marketing Center’s retail search database and then used to identify opportunities to bring new retail to these areas of the District. Additionally, the Marketing Center will use the results of this research to target its retail attraction efforts to retailers that can reinforce existing retail in the neighborhoods.

The Marketing Center will continue its neighborhood retail corridor inventory and is currently identifying additional commercial areas for future study.
