All About DC Business Incentives
May 18, 2012
On Wednesday, May 9 2012, over 60 people attended the Doing Business 2.0 seminar series covering a variety of incentive programs available to DC-based business owners and entrepreneurs. Speakers gave an overview of some of the most common incentives, including those for tech companies, supermarkets, retailers in great streets areas and more.
David Zipper, Director of Business Development at the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) discussed several resources available to District Residences, including:
- DC Tech Incentives, incentives that reduce the cost of doing business in the District for high-tech companies
- Supermarket Tax Credit, incentive that waives certain taxes and fees to supermarkets that locate in specific neighborhoods
- HUBZone Program, a program that gives federal contract preference to businesses in certain District neighborhoods
- DC Business Incentives Map, an online tool that determines incentives available to DC businesses based on geographical location
Gregory Johnson, Project Manager for DMPED, discussed the DC Revenue Bond Program, a program that provides below market interest rate loans to help lower cost of funds available for capital projects.
Andre Byers, Project Manager for DMPED, gave an overview of the Great Streets Initiative, a program designed to leverage public dollars to transform nine under-invested commercial corridors. He highlighted the H Street Retail Priority Grant which awards individual grants up to a maximum of $85,000 to support and foster growth amongst small businesses along the corridor.
Last, Blake Hall, CEO of TroopSwap, discussed his experience working with DMPED and other DC government agencies and why he ultimately chose the District as the place to establish his business.
