WDCEP Annual Meeting & Development Showcase Highlighted District’s Economic Resilience and Vibrancy
On October 2nd, the Washington, DC Economic Partnership hosted its 2008 Annual Meeting and Development Showcase (AMDS) at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center to highlight the more than $73.6B worth of development projects completed, under-construction and in-the-pipeline in DC which mark this major come-back. Over 1,000 people attended the event.
The event, infused with industry leaders and key government officials, included remarks by Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Neil Albert, highlighting the latest Moving Forward Faster campaign; an educational series featuring both Chief Technology Officer Vivek Kundra and Executive Managing Director of CB Richard Ellis, John Germano; as well as a Development Showcase, comprised of more than eighty exhibitors displaying projects located in every Ward throughout the District.
Keynote remarks were provided by Katharine Weymouth, CEO of the Washington Post Media and Publisher, The Washington Post, who addressed “The Challenges of Running a Media Company”. Weymouth spoke about the changing landscape of the media industry as impacted by the rise of online communication and growing market competition. The Post has been located within the District of Columbia for more than one-hundred years, surviving and reporting on major US occurrences including the recent inspiring tale of the economic resurgence and resilience of the Nation’s Capitol. Resilience played a central role in the theme of this year’s meeting.
“The District of Columbia has and continues to surpass economic expectations within the region,” remarked Steve Moore, President & CEO of the Washington, DC Economic Partnership. “We are adding jobs at twice our projections, we benefit from a well educated workforce, and our real estate market continues to expand. This is the type of news that we shared and promoted at our 2008 Annual Meeting & Development Showcase.”
