The WDCEP’s AccelerateDC Venture Mentoring Service is launching their “Boost Your Startup” speaker series this month with a panel discussion on how to protect every entrepreneurs’ money maker: Intellectual Property. The discussion will feature three of AccelerateDC’s experienced, volunteer mentors, including Phyllis Kristal, Principal at Fish & Richardson, and Paul Economon, Partner at Rimon, P.C.

Phyllis Kristal | Principal, Fish & Richardson
Phyllis K. Kristal is a Principal in the Washington D.C. office of Fish & Richardson P.C. Ms. Kristal joined the firm 1993. She has advised clients in all industry sectors on IP matters for more than 20 years, including patent prosecution, freedom to operate, patentability, validity, infringement, landscape, and due diligence studies. With a mechanical engineering background, Ms. Kristal has seen the entire range of IP issues a company of any size may encounter, and has proven experience counseling start-up companies on navigating the IP world. Ms. Kristal previously worked at DEKA R&D on the development of mobility aids for the disabled, and at Candela Laser Corporation on the design of laser catheters for angioplasty, biliary stones, eye surgery, and dermatology.
Paul Economon | Partner, Rimon
Paul Economon is a corporate, contract, commercial, business transactional and technology attorney with an extensive background in providing both legal and business support to the small to medium enterprise sector, with a strong focus on high technology. He has represented numerous privately-held, public, emerging and established companies. Mr. Economon has extensive transactional experience with various mergers & acquisitions, asset and stock purchases, corporate and entity reorganizations and recapitalizations, as well as the sale/purchase of securities and other financial facilities, and the accompanying compliance with state and federal securities laws. His experience with venture capital transactions comes from multiple perspectives – from being outside counsel for the company or the investing entity, to being in-house counsel for both at various times, as well as a being the business owner of a venture backed company. His present and former clients span the spectrum of hi-tech, from various high profile software development companies, to IT security experts and VARs, RFID ventures, online educators, federal contractors, mobile telecomm plays, healthcare innovators, green technology companies, online businesses, as well as venture funds and their portfolios. Mr. Economon is a member of and the Chief Legal Counsel for iMPACT Ventures Capital Group, LLC, an early stage venture group based in Northern Virginia, and is an equity holder/investor in a number of local start-up entities.
