Event Marketing and Fundraising Internship

The Event Marketing and Fundraising Intern will assist the Director of Business Development and Event Marketing with event logistics, vendor coordination, and fundraising for various events that promote Washington, DC for economic development.

This internship will provide the qualified individual with valuable skills in event planning, sponsorship activation, relationship management, and communication skills. This is ideal for individuals looking to pursue a career in business, fundraising, or event management. It will provide opportunities to interact with high level representatives of Washington, DC and include the following duties:

SXSW | March 2016

Logistical support for the coordination of Washington, DC’s efforts at SXSW in March.

  • Event Planning
  • Working with vendors associated with the SXSW 2016 DC program
  • Work with committee members and/or key volunteers
  • Organize, purchase and ship supplies and materials for event as needed
  • Provide logistical support when needed

Fundraising support to help raise funds to support Washington, DC’s efforts at SXSW.

  • Prospecting support
  • Researching contact information for sponsors
  • Cold calling via email to a list of designated companies
  • Registration
  • Assistance with pre-registration & onsite registration
  • Training on Event Farm – event registration platform
  • Marketing
  • Assist with fundraising and invitation email blasts
  • Manage post event emails
  • Assist with social media
  • Support for community/kickoff event to include
  • Event Setup/breakdown
  • Assistance with onsite guest check-in
  • Take notes/minutes for each meeting, compile and submit to Program lead

  • Support pre-planning efforts for the DC Reception
  • Review contracts and proposals for potential vendors
  • Assistance with pre-registration

General Support

  • Salesforce – enter in new sponsor applications
  • Front desk support

What You Will Learn

Completion of your internship program, you will depart Washington DC Economic Partnership with secured knowledge and the ability to achieve a skill set transferrable to you future profession through:

  • Executing large and small meetings through the process of working with vendors, registration support, volunteer management and overall logistical support
  • Learning how to strategically outreach to prospective sponsors
  • Familiarity with database – Salesforce and event platforms (Event Farm)
  • Overall general administration support


  • Strong interpersonal, verbal (including phone work) and written communication skills
  • Creative and detail-oriented
  • Basic computer processing skills including Microsoft Office and Internet
  • Interest in Special Events, partner execution and/or Hospitality Industry
  • College coursework or comparable work experience preferred
  • Previous internship experience is preferred
  • Preference will be given to college juniors and seniors and those seeking academic credit

This is a part-time internship (15 hours per week on average). The hours and time commitment are flexible to be set between the supervisor and the internship candidate prior to the start of the internship.
