Why did Smoot Construction choose to locate in DC?

How has being located in the District been beneficial, both professionally and personally?
Being headquartered in Washington, DC greatly broadens our reach as a regional contractor, given the number of industry and trade associations that are based here. Furthermore, the District government and surrounding counties prioritize excellence in building design and technology. DC also boasts some of the world’s most renowned architecture and engineering partners which are vital to our success.
How does community play a role in your day to day at work?
Community engagement is central to SmootDC’s daily operations. We place a high priority on nurturing strong relationships with our clients, partners, and stakeholders, fostering trust, collaboration, and mutual support. Additionally, we actively participate in various initiatives, volunteer efforts, and partnerships within the local community, contributing to the collective well-being and prosperity of the region. We are deeply committed to developing the local workforce, creating opportunities in construction careers, and leading efforts to expand diverse contracting opportunities for minority- and women-owned businesses.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received from someone else (at any point) in your career?
The most valuable advice I’ve received in business is that there is no substitute for technical excellence. Every client, partner, and team member rely on subject matter experts to achieve success. Regardless of title, tenure, or project role, anyone can commit to learning and mastering one area, becoming a valuable resource to the project. Continuously broadening one’s skillset is key.
What is something you are excited to either solve or spearhead in the next five years?
SmootDC is excited to expand our talent base, both in terms of quantity and service offerings. We are eager to strengthen our relationships with existing partners and clients, including local and national government, K-12 and higher education institutions, and power/utility construction. Additionally, we aim to establish or grow new business sectors such as industrial building and healthcare. Lastly, we are encouraged by our growth in the northeastern states and our ability to provide opportunities for team members across a broader regional footprint, all while operating from our home base in DC.
