Board Spotlight: Mike O’Hara

In this month’s Board Spotlight, Mike O’Hara, Partner, Bohler DC lets us know why they chose to do business in DC.

Why did Bohler choose to locate in DC?

Our MidAtlantic region has extensive experience in site civil engineering design for urban mixed-use projects, so it was natural to open an office near potential sites, closer to permitting agencies, our clients, and selfishly, to my house. The office’s location in Metro Center allows for easy commuting, provides access to a deep talent pool, and offers an amenity-rich environment for our staff.

How has being located in the District been beneficial, both professionally and personally?

Living in the District has allowed me to commit my time and energy to numerous local industry and charitable boards and organizations in order to improve and give back to the community.

How does community play a role in your day to day at work?

As a land development consulting firm, we strive to design projects that not only fulfill our clients’ missions but bring benefit to the surrounding communities as well. However, we don’t stop there. Our office created a philanthropic committee that allows our team to commit resources to groups that sustain our neighbors and allow creativity, equity and diversity to thrive.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received from someone else (at any point) in your career?

wo things come to mind. My dad, a championship coach and decorated educator, told me to always be humble and surround yourself with capable teammates. No one can succeed by themselves alone. And from my favorite TV coach, Ted Lasso: “You know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It’s a goldfish. It has a 10-second memory. Be a goldfish.” Meaning don’t dwell in the past, but use learned lessons to improve yourself. Look to the future and be optimistic.

What is something you are excited to either solve or spearhead in the next five years?

My retirement! I kid, I kid. Being part of the current thought leadership that will reimagine the downtown environs for decades to come. It is a once in a lifetime, opportunity that I am enthusiastically embracing.
