Manager, Small Business Development & Retail Attraction

Purpose: the purpose of the Manager, Small Business Development & Retail Attraction is to manage WDCEP’s “Entrepreneur Road Map” Speaker Series.

The candidate must have a minimum of a bachelor degree. The Manager of Business Development will serve the organization in a research capacity, will assist the organization in its individual business development offerings, and will help strengthen WDCEP’s relationships with the community’s economic development and small business programs and initiatives. A strong knowledge of Washington, DC Neighborhoods. The Candidate will also assist the President and CEO in fundraising effort related to programs such as the International Council of Shopping Center Conferences, the Annual Meeting and Development Showcase and the organization’s publications.

Position Description and Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of WDCEP’s “Entrepreneur Road Map” Speaker Series, Small Business Development, and other initiatives
  • Conduct Studies to gauge the effectiveness of “Entrepreneur Road Map” Speaker Series program and other initiatives
  • Track the progress of the workshop attendees
  • Conduct research on emerging industries
  • Manage the development of marketing strategies for business assistance programs and other business development initiatives
  • Develop and expand partnerships with neighborhood-based community development organizations
  • Serve as a business development specialist by providing assistance to small businesses and entrepreneurs
  • Manage the research and writing efforts of the DC Doing Business guide
  • Manage the organization and sponsorship of the annual WDCEP Development Showcase
  • Manage the organization of the Mid-Atlantic, New York and Las Vegas International Council of Shopping Center Conference (ICSC)

The Manager, Small Business Development & Retail Attraction will report to the President and CEO.

Organization Background: The Washington, DC Economic Partnership is a public/private partnership dedicated to facilitating economic development in the District of Columbia. As a 501 (c) (3) organization, WDCEP promotes business opportunities throughout the District of Columbia and contributes to business retention and attraction activities.

The goal of WDCEP’s business development program is to promote a business friendly environment in the District, facilitate business development and expansion through free consultative services and forums, and to conduct industry retention study and research.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSOCIATE

The full-time Administrative Associate is responsible for providing administrative support for the Washington, DC Economic Partnership (WDCEP).

This Administrative Associate reports to the Manager of Operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Administrative Associate will be responsible for the following areas of work:

Administrative Duties

  • Welcome visitors, in person or on the telephone; answering or referring inquiries.
  • Schedule and maintain President & CEO and conference room calendars.
  • Schedule event and meeting travel for management and staff, as needed.
  • Order supplies, ensure all supplies are well stocked.
  • Maintain database management (ACT).
  • Manage relationship with landlord/process maintenance requests.
  • Draft bi-monthly board meeting minutes for President & CEO and board approval.
  • Provide comprehensive admin support to staff and management.
  • Organize and maintain lobby space, conference rooms, kitchen, copy machine room, and other public space in office.

Communications & Marketing

  • Assist with writing of the monthly newsletter and providing input on the direction and creative content.
  • Uploading newsletter stories to the website and on Mailchimp.
  • Write news stories as they happen keeping our website up to date.
  • Create Twitter posts related to existing and new marketing campaigns.
  • Create and maintain other social media outlets, such as Facebook and LinkedIn.
  • Assist with monitoring and filing of all media placements with PR contracts.
  • Upkeep media binder and electronic filing system. With all media documents.

Meeting Management

  • Oversee meeting booking, cancellation, and postponement orders from clients.
  • Plan and coordinate all activities to successfully execute meetings and conferences, including being the key contact for third party vendors.
  • Obtain meeting request orders, book meeting rooms and send confirmations to clients.
  • Process and set up all other additional requests such as room set-up, catering needs and audio visual device requirements.
  • Prepare, print and collate necessary meeting documents, name tents, etc.
  • Create meeting sign in sheet (if necessary).
  • Track meetings (in ACT and excel).
  • Assist in marketing efforts of conference room rental.

Event Support

  • Assist with registration and invitations for all WDCEP events.
  • Track registration, make calls as necessary to ensure high turnout.
  • Print name badges.
  • Assist overseeing registration desk at all WDCEP events.
  • Assist with collection of registration fees for all events.
  • Input registrants into ACT after program.
  • Assist with program follow up tasks, as needed.

Perform other related duties as required

WDCEP Internship Program

Communications & Marketing  | Business Development

Through the WDCEP internship program, we hope to mentor young individuals who are interested in marketing and communications, event planning, data research, urban planning, retail, housing and commercial development of the vibrant city of Washington, DC. In addition to the critical experience gained at WDCEP, interns are exposed to a variety of projects that are focused as much as possible to their area of interest.line break

Communications & Marketing Intern

The WDCEP is looking for an Intern, Communications & Marketing that will assist with office e-communications, marketing, public relations, social media, research, and engage media outlets and local communities to promote our events, increase awareness of our development tools and small business resources and start conversations about economic development in DC.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with initiatives for SXSW
  • Write copy for press releases, op-eds, blog posts, newsletter articles, web site, and other marketing pieces
  • Assist in developing marketing campaigns for several of our large initiatives
  • Create content for and engagement on social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, youtube, LinkedIn)
  • Research economic development issues for communications pieces
  • Develop relationships with bloggers and press

Qualifications

  • Strong writing and editing skills with an attention to detail; will be asked to write in different capacities (email, letters, copy, creative, and 140 character messages)
  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated from undergraduate or graduate degree in business, marketing, public relations, public affairs, or similar programs
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment while being a self-starter with effective time management skills
  • Professional demeanor
  • Ability to learn and adapt in a fast pace environment
  • Basic Microsoft office experience
  • Previous office experience a plus
  • Knowledge of DC neighborhoods and an interest in the city’s economic development a plus

Business Development Intern

Responsibilities

  • Assist the WDCEP’s programming for all business retention and attraction initiatives
  • Assist with speaker series program that coordinates with WDCEP’s Doing Business in Washington DC Guide
  • Collect data from U.S. Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics and other databases
  • Conduct field research for development projects and neighborhoods
  • Assist with Urban Land Institutes (ULI) Conventions; International Council of Shopping Centers RECon Conference, Neighborhood Retail Summits, Restaurant/Retail Site Tours, and WDCEP’s Annual Meeting Luncheon and Development Showcase
  • Update and maintain database of retail sites throughout D.C (www.wdceprss.dc.gov)
  • Assist with organization of WDCEP Annual Meeting and Development Showcase
  • Assist DC’s retail attraction efforts
  • Custom research project opportunities available
  • Present presentation to office staff at end of term on key takeaways and/or research project findings

Qualifications

  • Part -time and full-time positions available; full-time preferred
  • Professional demeanor

  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated from a undergraduate or graduate program in Economics, Economic Development, Urban or Regional Planning, Public Policy, Business, or similar program
