Operations Manager

The WDCEP Operations Manager is responsible for directing and managing the organization’s financial and accounting policies, systems and processes, tax and regulatory requirements, payroll systems and processes, and ongoing financial modeling and reporting. This position reports to the President & CEO of the organization.

Key Accountabilities
Accounting, Payroll, Financial Systems, and Financial Controls:
Responsible for the delivery of efficient accounting and financial systems, policies and processes that meet the current and future business requirements of the organization.

  • Manage all aspects of Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Billing
  • Manage corporate credit card charges and reconcile monthly credit card statements
  • Manage petty cash account
  • Work with outside accounting firm to prepare the monthly close and the year-end close
  • Track board contributions
  • Oversee the External Audit, review and analyze results, and recommend for approval the Audited Financial Statements
  • Prepare the financial section of the annual report
  • Manage the Cash Management function, including banking relationships
  • Ensure that WDCEP is in compliance with all internal policies and relevant regulations, and ensure filings are completed in a timely manner
  • Manage the payroll function, ensuring efficient systems, processes, and controls
  • Manage and maintain accounting policies and procedures

Cash and Risk Management:

  • Manage the annual insurance renewal process and ensure appropriate coverage is maintained at all times
  • Ensure appropriate legal review of contracts and solicit external legal advice, as required
  • Manage ongoing banking relationships for maximum efficiency

Management Reporting:

  • Ensure that financial management reporting processes are in place and are continuously maintained
  • Present monthly and year-to-date financials with accompanying analysis of results

Budgeting and Financial Modeling:

  • Work with President and CEO to develop the annual operating budget
  • Develop program budgets as needed
  • Provide ongoing financial modeling and analysis expertise

HR Management:

  • Set-up and maintain records for new employees
  • Prepare and review termination paperwork
  • Manage and maintain employee records, payroll records, and leave time records
  • Manage the 401k plan
  • Manage and maintain the timekeeping system

Fundraising and Grant Management:
Manage received grant funding; this includes preparation of progress reports, budget management and expense tracking, and management of employees’ time spent on each grant

General:

  • Manage the Administrative Associate position
  • Manage general office operations
  • Other projects, as needed

COMPENSATION: $50,000-$60,000 (depending on qualifications) + benefits (e.g. health, dental, 401k, life, office gym)

WDCEP Internship Program

Communications & Marketing  | Business Development

Through the WDCEP internship program, we hope to mentor young individuals who are interested in urban planning, retail, housing and commercial development of the vibrant city of Washington DC. In addition to the critical experience gained at WDCEP, interns are exposed to a variety of projects that are focused as much as possible to their area of interestline break

Communications & Marketing Intern

The WDCEP is looking for an Intern, Communications & Marketing that will assist with office e-communications, marketing, public relations, social media, and engage media outlets and local communities to promote our events, increase awareness of our development tools and small business resources and start conversations about economic development in DC.

Responsibilities

  • Write press releases, op-eds, blog posts, newsletter articles and other marketing pieces
  • Assist in developing new public relations & marketing plan
  • Assist in developing marketing campaigns for several of our large initiatives
  • Assist in developing and implementing social media strategy
  • Create content for social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, youtube, LinkedIn)
  • Research economic development issues for communications pieces
  • Develop relationships with bloggers and press

Qualifications

  • Strong writing and editing skills with an attention to detail; will be asked to write in different capacities (email, letters, copy, creative, and 140 character messages)
  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated from undergraduate or graduate degree in business, marketing, public relations, public affairs, or similar programs
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment while being a self-starter with effective time management skills
  • Professional demeanor
  • Ability to learn and adapt in a fast pace environment
  • Basic Microsoft office experience
  • Previous office experience a plus
  • Knowledge of DC neighborhoods and an interest in the city’s economic development a plus

Business Development Intern

Responsibilities

  • Assist the WDCEP’s programming for all business retention and attraction initiatives
  • Assist with speaker series program that coordinates with WDCEP’s Doing Business in Washington DC Guide
  • Collect data from U.S. Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics and other databases
  • Conduct field research for development projects and neighborhoods
  • Assist with Urban Land Institutes (ULI) Conventions; International Council of Shopping Centers RECon Conference, Neighborhood Retail Summits, Restaurant/Retail Site Tours, and WDCEP’s Annual Meeting Luncheon and Development Showcase
  • Update and maintain database of retail sites throughout D.C (www.wdceprss.dc.gov)
  • Assist with organization of WDCEP Annual Meeting and Development Showcase
  • Assist DC’s retail attraction efforts
  • Custom research project opportunities available
  • Present presentation to office staff at end of term on key takeaways and/or research project findings

Qualifications

  • Part -time and full-time positions available; full-time preferred
  • Professional demeanor

  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated from a undergraduate or graduate program in Economics, Economic Development, Urban or Regional Planning, Public Policy, Business, or similar program
  • Preferably enjoy collecting & cataloging data
  • Basic Microsoft office experience
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to pay attention to detail
  • Previous office experience a plus
  • Business professional attire required
