Retail attraction to Washington, DC
Since 2001, WDCEP leads Washington, DC’s retail attraction efforts at International Council of Shopping Centers’ (ICSC) Real Estate Convention (RECon)
Each year, Washington, DC joins more than 33,000 retail real estate professionals to highlight the city as a primary growth market to the nation’s retail development community. The convention provides the city with valuable face time with investors, brokers, and retailers.
In 2016, WDCEP conducted nearly 70 meetings with retailers and developers from across the nation.
High-priority retail opportunities in Wards 5, 7, and 8, as well as major development projects throughout the city, including St. Elizabeths East Campus, Walter Reed, the Shops at Dakota Crossing, CityCenterDC, Rhode Island Row, Skyland, Capitol Gateway Marketplace remain the primary focus of the city at conferences such as ICSC. Site selection teams present the entire portfolio of major DC real estate developments to retailers, as well as give virtual GIS tours of the city. Through the Retail Site Search tool on WDCEP’s website, retailers are able to view available retail sites found throughout the city.
Major deals with large retailers include Dicks Sporting Goods, Walmart, Lowes Home Improvement, and Nordstroms Rack.
Members of the 2016 delegation include Mayor Muriel Bowser, Deputy Mayor Brian Kenner, high level city officials, and city partners. The District government and WDCEP’s attendance at ICSC conventions for the past 15 years have led to major deals with large retailers including Harris Teeter, Target, Best Buy, Trader Joes, among many others. In addition to the Las Vegas convention, WDCEP represents Washington, DC annually at ICSC Mid-Atlantic (Washington, DC) and ICSC New York (New York, NY) conventions.
The WDCEP’s ICSC and retail attraction efforts have resulted in numerous new retailers, restaurants and entertainment establishments opening new stores and expanding existing operations in DC—bringing jobs and increased tax revenue.
WDCEP’s 2,400 sq. ft. booth features four conference rooms for meetings, GIS capabilities for virtual tours, 160 linear feet on the exterior to showcase Washington, DC projects, lobby with a 9′ x 7′ video wall, interactive retail site table and publication/marketing material display areas.
